Bengal, Ballads from the Bay of History. Renowned for its rich literary and cultural heritage, Bengal is situated in the northeast region of the Indian subcontinent. Divided between the Republic of Bangladesh and the Indian state of West Bengal, the region has contributed immensely to the uplift of Indian society in the form of Bengal renaissance during the 19th and early 20th century, questioning existing practices like dowry, the caste system and religion. The most defining expression of Bangla music came from Ravindranath Tagore, who also is the first Asian to win a nobel prize in literature.
